Malcolm Falzon and Terence Cassar have contributed to the June edition of the Online Gambling Lawyer (previously the World Online Gambling Law Report), with an article entitled “Upcoming changes to gaming regulation in Malta”.
The article elaborates on the upcoming overhaul of Malta’s gaming regulations, with a particular focus on the potential establishment of a National Betting Exchange, the possible regulation of cryptocurrencies and the transformation of Maltese gaming license classification. The authors also outline the context of the changes, the potential changes in practice and discuss the key issues that they look forward to being addressed as part of the upcoming regulatory overhaul.

It should be noted that this article was written throughout June 2017. Thereafter on the 10th of July 2017,the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit jointly with the Malta Gaming Authority (“MGA”) published a consultation on the “Application of Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Funding of Terrorism Obligations to the Remote Gaming Sector” (the “Consultation”). Furthermore, on the 12th of July 2017, the MGA published a “White Paper Proposing Major Reforms to Malta’s Gaming Legal Framework” (the “White Paper”).
